CS 396: Meeting 2 – Networking
Dear students,Today Alyssa from Career Services will help us prepare for the upcoming career fair. I’d like to take a moment to say that you’ve got an awesome opportunity here. I had nothing like this when I was an undergraduate, and I spent many hours sending emails to potential employers and never hearing back. It was very frustrating. On September 28, however, you get to be locked in a room with a whole bunch of people that want to hire you. This is a sweet deal.
The readings for next time focus on a skill that can take immense pressure off of you during conversations: ask questions.
Here’s your TODO list for next time:
- Check your email for the first grade report. If you missed the Slack discussion points, you have the rest of the night to remedy the situation!
- Bring at least two printed copies of your resume to class next week. This itself is worth 1 Blugold. One copy will be turned in to me, and the other will be marked up during our resume review.
- Read How to Ask Better Questions.
- Read The One Conversational Tool That Will Make You Better At Absolutely Everything.
- Read Interview Questions You Should Be Asking.
- Discuss these articles in your small group Slack channel. Consider answering these questions:
- What questions would you ask would-be employers?
- What ideas from the readings are most interesting, disturbing, confirming, or life-changing?
- Are there points you disagree with? Initiate a respectful debate.
- What experiences from your life align or do not align with the articles?
See you next class!
Sincerely,
P.S. It’s time for a haiku!
0.1 is bad
But just spell it G-A-P
Then it’s 3.9
P.P.S. Here’s another:
Talking is awkward
But you’ll do much less of it
With a weird handshake
