CS 347: Lecture 2 – Some More HTML

Dear students:

Last time we met a few very common HTML elements. In this lecture we meet a few more. We also reiterate the nature of HTML as a language for communicating structure and not presentation. The semantic meaning of HTML is used in situations where no visual is produced. We also see how to verify that the HTML we’ve written is well-formed.

Here’s your TODO list:

• Watch Second Gallery, in which we meet a few more HTML elements.
• Watch HTML Entities, in which we encounter and overcome trouble rendering certain symbols.
• Watch Semantic Structure, in which we introduce some tags that provide an overarching navigational structure to our pages.
• Watch Using a Screen Reader, in which some folks from the University of Washington demonstrate the importance of semantic structure to users of screen readers.
• Watch Head Elements, in which we meet the elements that appear in head.
• Watch Validating HTML, in which we examine at a tool that can tell us when we’re writing bad HTML.
• Watch Haiku, in which we take a poetic aside.
• Read chapter 4 of Client-side Web Development.
• Post any questions and comments you have regarding the videos and readings on the course Slack.
• Set up your Digital Ocean droplet. You’ll need this to be up before next week when we officially start your blog. Post any issues you encounter on Slack—even if you fix them yourself.
