With exceptions in our toolbelt, we’re ready for a little Program This:

Let’s create a testing framework! Write two methods for asserting that two values are equal. Call them assertEquals. Accept as parameters a String error message, an expected value, and an actual value. Have one version work with String values, the other with ints. When the values are not the same, throw an exception using the error message.

Folks using our testing framework can see if their code is doing the expected thing by saying something like:

assertEquals("plus didn't do the right thing", 11, plus(5, 6));

We looked at the diversion pattern last time. This let us do extra work when certain criteria was met. Today we look at the bifurcation pattern, where we choose between two mutually exclusive paths through our code. We examine it through a series of examples:

• a zigzag pattern in Madeup
• a sunshine pattern in Madeup
• a webpage that is sometimes red, sometimes blue
• a method that computes the minimum of two numbers
• a method that rounds a number
• a method that computes the overall price of an item, including tax if necessary
• a method that determines if a String’s last character is !
• a method that given a month and day, tells what weekday that day is in the current year
