Note

We start our discussion today with a philosophical question. Spend a minute telling your neighbor about what you observe or think about when you see this picture:

A hot dog man. I can’t locate the source.

Now, let’s examine another. With your neighbor, articulate what you notice in this picture, comparing it to the previous:

A hot dog machine.

We head from here into a discussion of objects, looking at some examples of circles and an NDeckerBurger. Objects at their core are the marriage of data and code. When we compose a new object, we breathe life into our data. The creation process involves thinking about a few of things:

• what is my object’s state or instance variables?
• what behaviors or methods does my object support?
• when a new object is born, what state is it in?
